Sustainability

OUR PACKAGING

When it comes to sustainability, we know that packaging and food waste are incredibly important. That’s why we’re working hard to make sure that our packaging is as sustainable as possible whilst at the same time, minimising food waste. Our key focus is on making our plastic packaging as sustainable as we possibly can, with teams across our company working on this right now.

As part of this, we’ve have signed up to the UK Plastics Pact – a world first that means we’re working on hitting these ambitious targets as quickly as possible:

  • Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use plastic packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (re-use) delivery models.
  • 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable
  • 70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled or composted
  • 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging

You can find out more about the UK Plastics Pact here:

http://www.wrap.org.uk/content/the-uk-plastics-pact

In the meantime:

  • All our cardboard is made from recycled board that can be recycled across the country.
  • We only use vegetable-based inks & water-based varnishes across all our products.
  • The trays inside our Thins boxes are made from 100% recycled PET plastic (but we’re working to change them so they can be recycled again and again)
  • We’ve helped prevent food waste by introducing portion packs on our Crunchy Rye Bread range to keep your Ryvita fresher for longer.
  • We’ve added clear recycling information across most of our packs to make it as easy as possible for you to dispose of our packaging responsibly.

What to do with our packaging:

  • Boxes:  all WIDELY RECYCLED
  • Plastic Wrappers & Trays:  Not Yet Recycled

But wait…

The above is based on WRAP guidelines, where a piece of packaging is only classed as “recyclable” if over 80% of UK councils have the facilities to recycle it.

This means, even if a type of plastic could be recycled, we may not be able to label it as “recyclable” as there may not be enough councils that have the facilities to recycle it.

It is always worth checking with your local council, as some may be able to recycle our Thins & Crackerbread wrappers which are made of PP(5). Unfortunately, our Crunchy Rye Bread wrappers are not yet recyclable at any council (but we’re working on it).

SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

We have seen some incorrect information online claiming that we don’t use sustainable palm oil in our products.

We can confirm that we use 100% Certified Sustainable Palm Oil in one of our products, with the rest of our range containing no palm oil at all.

The only product in our range which currently contains palm oil is our Multi-Seed Thins and our aim is to remove palm oil altogether in the near future.

If you would like to discuss this further or need more information, we’ll be very happy to help – you can find all our details here: https://www.ryvita.co.uk/contact-us
