What is Rye?
Rye is a cereal grain, like wheat, oats or barley. It's a tough plant that can grow in harsh cold and windy conditions - it's even grown as far north as the Arctic Circle! At Ryvita all of our Rye is grown in the UK and we work closely with all our farmers to support the British countryside. We are proud to support the Prince’s Countryside Fund, which looks to support the countryside.
Why is Rye good for me?
Due to the nature of wholegrains, rye is naturally high in fibre and a great source of magnesium, iron and zinc. At Ryvita, we use wholegrain rye flour to make our Crispbread which means we capture lots of this natural goodness in every bite.
So what is a Wholegrain?
An ingredient that is wholegrain includes all parts of the grain – the bran (outer layer), endosperm (energy rich middle) and the germ (nutritious core), with just the inedible husk removed. Wholegrains have around 4 times the amount of fibre as refined grains and rye fibre helps maintain a healthy digestive system*.
*Ryvita Crispbreads are high in rye fibre (>6g of fibre per 100g) which contributes to normal bowel function when consumed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Ryvita Crispbreads are a source of Magnesium. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 chemical reactions in the body, including helping to maintain normal muscle and nerve function. Our bodies can’t produce this vital mineral so it’s important we eat enough Magnesium-rich foods to stay healthy.*
For those looking for a gym-honed frame, magnesium helps contribute to normal muscle function and helps to make protein in our bodies. Our favourite pre or post gym snack is Ryvita Crispbread topped with a generous helping of Peanut Butter and Banana.
*Ryvita crispbreads are a source of magnesium (>15% of the RDA) which contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, normal muscle function and normal protein synthesis when consumed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Iron is part of hemoglobin, which is a protein in the blood that transports oxygen to all the cells in your body. Iron is needed by our bodies for:
- Transporting oxygen in the blood and in the muscles.*
- Creation of red blood cells.*
- Maintaining a healthy immune system.*
*Ryvita crispbreads are a source of iron (>15% of the RDA) which contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body and contributes to the normal function of the immune system when consumed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Zinc is found in all cells throughout the body. It helps make proteins and DNA, the genetic material in all cells*. All our Ryvita Crispbreads are a source of zinc; Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crispbread has the highest zinc content, providing 32% of the RDA for zinc per 100g.
