Don’t just increase your fibre, increase your water intake too!

Getting more fibre into our diet is really important, many of the articles you can find on our website and the NHS Choices website show that people in the UK are just not getting enough fibre into their diet, only 1 in 10! If you’re reading this article, then you have likely decided to jump on board with us and take part in our FibreFit 30in30 Challenge – well done!


Over the next 30 days you’ll be looking at different ways to steadily increase your fibre intake, building up to the recommended 30g per day, and you will receive lots of helpful hints and tips from us during your 30 day journey, and here is another one for you! 

It’s important to remember that getting more fibre into your diet means you may need to also increase your daily water intake.

So, how much water should I be drinking?

According to the NHS we should all be drinking between 6-8 glasses of water per day, which equates to about 1.2 litres. The NHS goes on to say that “your body needs water or other fluids to work properly and to avoid dehydration” in addition, when it gets to the warmer months “the body needs more than this”.


Why do I need to increase my water intake?

As you increase your fibre intake you may feel some changes to your bodily function, the NHS states that, “Fibre acts like a sponge, absorbing water. Without fluid, the fibre cannot do its job and you'll get constipation” and “It’s important to keep drinking, especially water. It encourages the passage of waste through your digestive system and helps soften poo.”

If you’re currently missing the mark and don’t get enough water into your day, here’s a couple of simple tips to help you increase your water intake. Whenever you make a meal or reach for a snack, just fill up a glass of water at the same time and this will get you on the way to achieving 6-8 glasses of water in no time – simple! Another way to help is by getting a water bottle with a time tracker so you can physically see how much water you’ve consumed throughout the day.
